Q. Does Ask Oscar work on Windows 7?

UPDATE. By default the latest versions of Ask Oscar, from version 1.1.1 onwards, installs Ask Oscar with this registry setting now set to False.

Ask Oscar works on Window 7, but you will need to turn off the 'Actors'. These are Microsoft Agents, like the annoying paper clip there was in Word, and they do not display correctly on Windows 7. Turning them off does not in anyway compromise the functionality of Ask Oscar and most schools seem to turn them off anyway.

To turn off the actor, you need to access the Ask Oscar option panel.
Run Ask Oscar and then select the Actor Tab from the control panel and turn off Use Actor.
This makes a change to a registry setting in HKEY_CURRENT_USER/Software/Kudlian Software/Ask Oscar
The key change is to the UseActor key and changes it from True to False.

Q. Ask Oscar 1.1.0. On a Windows 2003 server running terminal services I get a "runtime error 91" message.

We are aware that there is an issue when trying to run Ask Oscar on a thin client network. We believe this is due to Ask Oscar using Microsoft Agents which will not function correctly in this type of environment. We have looked into this but it would appear that there is an issue using the Microsoft Agent on thin clients and it would appear, is not just a problem with Ask Oscar. We have no control over the compatibility of Microsoft Agent software with their own systems. The Microsoft Agent is a feature that can be turned off in Ask Oscar through the Options panel via the keyboard shortcut of pressing the Shift and Ctrl keys and O. You might try installing to the server and registering the software in the normal way and then in a client session, probably on the server as admin, disabled the agent from the panel. We are looking to rebuild the Ask Oscar image during the first or second quarter of the new year, minus the Microsoft Agent component. This will hopefully overcome this issue and the use of the Agent on Windows 7 systems.

Q. Are MSI and RM CC3 network installers available for Ask Oscar?

Yes. The latest CD's contain both MSI and CC3 network installers. Please contact us for details.

Q. Windows: I receive an "Error 6: Overflow" error when opening a tree

The above error is given when a tree is opened that contains either invalid images or images far too large to be feasibly used in Ask Oscar. Examine the image files you are using in your trees, and if they are large manually scale them down to around 100 x 100 before letting pupils use them in their work.

Note, it is not necessary to resize images unless you are receiving this error message.

Q. Macintosh: My trees are not displayed correctly on Mac OS X Tiger

This issue has been corrected in Ask Oscar 1.0.1 for Macintosh. This version fixes a number of issues relating to the correct display of the tree and Yes/No buttons under Tiger.

For Tiger users, this version also integrates with the Spotlight searching feature.

Q. Windows: Oscar is not talking on Windows 2000 or XP

This is because of a problem with the Text-to-speech software on Windows 2000 and XP. This has been resolved on version 1.0.2.
